Amigos y amantes

Why do people see the planets as round? Because the subjective beggars have round eyes … Suppose the world isn’t round, but hexagonal? (SL, p. 212) Certainly in his naturalist plays it is the case that the figures who stand opposed to one another – women and men, in most cases – live in entirely different moral, cognitive and expressive worlds. With Strindberg’s expressionist turn he simply continues the project of anatomical psychology and enters into an investigation of the cognitive faculties of the individual person.

8 Strindberg’s sometime drinking companion Edvard Munch produced the same type of protoexpressionism in his painting at around the same time, in the 1890s. In To Damascus we have an example of this practice when a funeral procession enters with the mourners dressed in brown. When the Stranger asks the mourners why they are wearing brown, they respond that they are not – that they are in fact wearing black. Since the audience shares the Stranger’s perception that the men are wearing brown, the whole issue of objective reality is called into question.
