Amigos y amantes

Let us try another tack. The book has no assured answers to the questions of Indian poverty, injustice, and caste rigidity, partly because it does not choose to give them priority, though we surely know that it is not an evasive or willfully "positive" book. All the wrongs and evils of India are there, steeped in the life of the people, yet these do not keep them from grasping the sensations of their moment, or from experiencing the appetites and ceremonies they rightly take to be their due. " It is as if their culture actually enables them to hold two ideas in their heads at once.

The parallel lines, then, move endlessly into the future, without joining or reconcilement. Yet a mark of transfiguration has been stamped upon the book; whatever he may do, Kim will forever and beyond forgetting be the old man's chela. That mark of transfiguration is of course the print of love, and one can only wonder, in putting down this incomparable book, how strongly Kipling was aware that in guiding his two friends through pleasure and into the joy of being, he may also have been leaving pleasure behind.

What lord of whose battle-line? " And so it can hardly be I Ie to whom "Recessional" is addressed. Nor can we any more plausibly identify Him as Allah or Siva or Buddha or Mithras or the god of the Parsec or the god of the Jain; although, since Kipling is fervently aware of the Indian regiments fighting beside the British in Burma and South Africa, it might reasonably seem that the God addressed should incorporate these unchristian deities at the same time that it excludes the Christian deity of Imperial Germany.
