The Education Reform Act of 1988 introduced a new, prescribed National Curriculum, and a new standardised system of national assessment; set attainment targets in each of its subjects for children to reach at certain ages; appointed special bodies to oversee the implementation and assessment of the curriculum; and required Local Education Authorities (LEAs), school governors and headteachers to ensure that the National Curriculum was taught in all state schools.
